Balancing risk and reward

When investing money, consider your need and ability to take risk

By Lorna Tan, Correspondent

Higher returns equals higher risk. It’s a basic fact of investing, yet working out just how much of a gamble you are willing to take with your cash is far harder to pin down.

The other side of the coin is when investors get so caught up chasing high returns that they ignore the risk element.

So it’s worth trying to understand what your personal risk profile is before investing your money.

But they are also dissatisfied with their achievements and enjoy life the least, compared with those who are less well-off.

Indeed, it is the Singaporeans earning less than $2,000 a month who enjoy life the most, concluded the three academics behind the study.

Written by: Gilbert Goh

Many people who were retrenched during the recent recession lamented how badly they were treated after been laid off by their companies.  I joined the Money section of The Straits Times in May 2000. Back then, the personal finance sector, made up of banks, insurers and broking houses, was like a sleepy giant. Each party operated in its own silo and cross-selling was uncommon.

But my timing couldn’t have been better because, fortunately for me, the party began after I joined the paper.

Errant parenting helps breed teenage crime

Counsellors say most teen offenders come from homes without parental guidance

HERE is how to raise a teen criminal:

Do not care about the child’s life.

Do not communicate with him.

Regularly abuse him physically and emotionally.

And, oh, for good measure, make sure he’s watching when you yourself are engaged in vices like gambling and smoking.

Counsellors say parents who do not put in the time can expect a crime – that of their children.
