Seeing Old as a Never-Ending Adventure

OCALA, Fla. — Ilse Telesmanich, 90, sprained her ankle hiking in South Africa last August. She tried to keep going on the three-week trip, she said, hobbled as she was.

“I got very good at hopping on one foot the last time I sprained it,” she said.

But the guides had unfortunately failed to bring along any crutches — let alone walkers. So Ms. Telesmanich cut the trip short, but she is planning on leaving her home here in central Florida this summer to complete what she started.

Maximising your career options

Gone are the days of lifetime ; job tenure is shrinking.

On a global basis as well as in Singapore, average job tenure has reduced from seven to six years, according to DBM, a human resource consulting firm that surveys professionals in transition each year.

Statistics now show employees will find themselves in the midst of a job change at least eight times in their lifetime.

What will make this inevitable event a success depends on the depth and breadth of your personal network.

Older Workers/Job-Seekers:
Use Your to Your Advantage

by Joe Turner

While it’s true that not all employers will be gung-ho about hiring, or even retaining, older workers in the coming years, the overall statistics might well be on your side, if you’re 50+ years. As has been reported often enough, the limited numbers of workers in the Gen-Y group will not match the rising need for workers over the next 10 years.

This discrepancy means that employers will be faced with more vacancies that force them to look at alternate labor sources. Sure, they can outsource, further automate, or contract their staffing ranks, but these approaches will not suffice in all cases.

They find newspapers have more job ads, are up to date and are easier to search

By Jessica Cheam

A RECENT survey of Singapore’s workforce has found that the newspaper medium is still the top choice for job seekers.

Despite the well-documented mass migration globally to the online world, the printed word still remains attractive for many job seekers, the survey found.

The poll, of 1,018 people aged 15 to 59, found 83 per cent of the workforce prefer newspapers if they are seeking a job.

BOSSES are still struggling to find top-quality candidates despite mass job cuts, leading recruitment experts say.

The number of skilled applicants is at record lows despite 30,800 full-time being axed in August, pushing the overall number of unemployed Australians to 663,600.

Hudson recruitment’s Scott Stacey said it was a myth that the skills shortage ended with the global financial crisis and that employers were now awash with good talent.

“The reality is it’s still tougher than ever,” he said.

Unemployment blues: Value of temporary work (SD editorials)

after_layoffs_0128

Although the job market has improved over the past year, many employers are still reluctant to make a long term commitment to growing their employee rolls until it is clear that a solid economic expansion is underway. They need new staff to handle the increase in orders and customer demands but are loath to hire permanent workers who may have to be cut in a few months if business stagnates. Any reduction in force carries major headaches for a company: employee morale falls, lawsuits arise, precious time is eaten up in non-productive meetings, and severance packages cut into narrowing profit margins.

7 steps to finding a job online

By Anne Fisher, contributor
Last Updated: September 17, 2009: 12:16 PM ET

NEW YORK (Fortune) — Dear Annie: I have two questions for you. First, I graduated from a top engineering college in June and have been applying for all summer with no luck.

I’ve targeted five companies I’d especially like to for who I know are hiring entry-level engineers. I sent them my resume online and registered on their web sites, but have heard nothing from any of them. I don’t want to be a pest, but should I call or e-mail to make sure they have seen my resume?
