Liposuction: Fat Takings (Sunday Times 17 Jan)

Fat Takings
Every year, thousands of women – and increasingly men – subject themselves to liposuction at a clinic or hospital here in a bid to attain an enviable, svelte figure.
This surgical procedure to remove fat through suction is a burgeoning multimillion-dollar industry, but not one without risks, as the recent death of property head honcho Franklin Heng has shown.
While details of what caused his death have not been revealed, it has nonetheless cast a pall on a controversial industry that has, in the last few years, been the subject of much heated debate that has split the medical fraternity and seen the Ministry of Health’s (MOH) eventual intervention.

Sleep loss may affect health by curbing exercise
A number of studies have linked chronic sleep deprivation to a heightened risk of obesity, diabetes and heart disease. Now, a small study suggests that low levels of physical activity during the day may partly account for the connection.
In a study of 15 healthy men, researchers found that a couple nights of grabbing only four hours of sleep caused the men to curtail their physical activity compared with days where they had gotten the standard eight hours the night before.

THE list of casualties wasn’t as long as you might have expected from the worst global downturn since the 1929 Great Depression. By the time 2009 ended, about 20,000 workers had been laid off here, according to the National Trades Union Congress (NTUC).
And that’s less than the numbers in the previous two crashes – 29,080 during the 1998 Asian financial crisis and 25,840 during the 2001 Sars outbreak.

Transitioning.org is happy to have celebrated this year with our loyal readers. Many have told me that 2009 is best left forgotten. Many also hope that the new year 2010 will be a better year for them. I couldn’t agree more.
This year also marked the death of our favourite pop icon Michael Jackson and more significantly America chose a black man as their President for the first time.

Don’t fall for the lure
Some people are letting financial advisers ‘churn’ their CPF savings to pocket cash rebates – a risky and illegal practice
The lure of getting their hands on some quick cash from their Central Provident Fund (CPF) savings is leading Singaporeans into a minefield of legal and financial risks.
And if you are found guilty of violating CPF rules, you may find yourself poorer by as much as $10,000 or more.
The experience of Mr George Low (not his real name) illustrates the dangers.

DON’T expect a depressed man to weep or cry while expressing sadness.
According to depression experts Today spoke to, men who have the blues tend to display very different symptoms from women.
Rather than admit that they are depressed, men are more likely to abuse alcohol, display violence, anger, or irritability, said Dr Daniel Kwek, head and senior consultant of department of psychological medicine at Tan Tock Seng Hospital (TTSH). Opinion: Are The Integrated Resorts Really Good for Us?

I applaud the move by the integrated resorts to check on the names of gamblers before allowing them to enter the casinoes when ithey open next year. I am not in favour of having the integrated resorts (IR) in our country in the first place. Casinoes have a bad history of association with the five big vices: prostitution, loan shark, alcoholism, money laundering and of course gambling. Gangsterism also reined in such environment.as illicit activitites prospered.
