40-year-old jobless PMET with A level asks if he is too old to work?

Hi Gilbert,

Came across your website while searching for government subsidised courses…am desperate to seek your advice.

I was retrenched by my employer recently and have been trying to find a job since then but to no avail. I have tried to apply for all sorts of jobs including those that is not my line of work.

I was previously in the banking sector. But none of my applications seem to come back at all. For those that came back with an interview, after the interview, they said they required people with experience – which I do not have.

I have gone through job agencies, newspapers, online searches, heck I have even applied for part-time in Cold Storage…but still no news.

Is it because of my age? I am 40 this year – not much education, only ‘A’ levels. What can I do?

My savings are running out and I am at my wit’s end.

    Hi! Amos,

You should have started thinking of your education background at a much younger age. You should go for more upgrading if you realized your education was not too good. Or you should get a job that required specialized skills instead of higher education. Then today you might not have got into such a situation. Nowadays the whole market situation had changed. There are plenty of workers with much higher education than an ‘A levels. Why would employees hired you when they have plenty of graduates aiming for jobs?
