30-year-old jobless millennial depressed after sending out 800 job applications without success

Hi Gilbert,

I am a 30-year-old Singaporean Chinese millennial who used to run 2 e-commerce start-ups. As you know, e-commerce start-ups are limited by investor capital so I decided to shut down the business after 3 years. I have a Australian degree in communications. My previous experience was working as a Executive Assistant to a high-level executive in the IT industry.

I’ve been on the job hunt since January this year for managerial roles in digital marketing or marketing communications. After sending over few hundred applications to employers in SG, I have zero offers. I wonder if local employers don’t value start-up experience and prefer corporate experience. Most job descriptions state ” must have x of years in MNC or leading corporation”. So much for Singapore government promoting entrepreneurship…

Now, I’ve expanded my search to Southeast Asia. I’ve since sent out over 800 applications and still waiting for news. I’ve been slipping in and out of depression as I am a highly motivated individual and have high expectations of myself. I don’t even want to meet my friends because they will surely ask “So what are you doing now?”

I worry the longer I stay unemployed, there will be a gap in my CV. Luckily I’ve some savings to tide me over but without a job, I feel I am drifting by day-to-day.

Could I attach my CV to see if you have any regional contacts who might help?

Warm regards,
