Singaporean banker left to work in Sydney Australia and feeling happier

Australia is a top-choice country for Singaporeans to resettle and so far about 30,000 Singaporeans have make the down-under spot their home. Perth, Melbourne and Sydney are their favourite cities though Adelaide and Canberra are not lagging far behind in terns of employment and resettlement opportunities.

Many Singaporeans prefer the less stressful environment here whereby worklife balance is a practice rather than a myth back home.Though the taxes are high by Singaporean standard, the higher starting pay make up for the almost 35% average income taxes for most executives working in Australia. However, education, healthcare and retirement welfare are easily available due to the hefty taxes paid.

We interviewed Victor, a Singaporean banker based in Sydney and currently working as a deputy CFO in a bank.

Transitioning: Describe abit about yourself Victor e.g. personal particulars, educational qualification,  work experience.

Victor: I am a Singaporean male based overseas. Previously educated in Australia. I am a Deputy CFO working at a bank in AU.

Transitioning: Where are you living now and why do you choose that location?

Victor: Sydney. Was send by employer to set up bank operations in said location.

Transitioning: Did you face any adjustment problem initially when you make the move? Any regrets so  far?

Victor: No regrets.

Transitioning: How is the family coping currently? Are they happy or do they want to move back to Singapore?

Victor: Family especially the kids are much happier in Australia.

Transitioning: What precious lessons did you learn from living abroad? Will you do it again if given the choice?

Victor: You need to rely on yourself and get out of your comfort zone. Yes.

Transitioning: Was it difficult to get jobs while staying abroad? Describe your job search experience and how different  it is from Singapore.

Victor: I was luckier in this aspect. Was send over as an expat before settling as a local.

Transitioning: Do you want to return to Singapore eventually or prefer to settle down in your new place permanently?

Victor: Settle at new place.

Transitioning: What are your main reasons for wanting to move overseas?

Victor: For the kids. Want them to have a happy childhood and not to grow up in a high pressure environment such as Singapore.

Transitioning: What are your advice for those  Singaporean migrants who have newly move abroad?

Victor: Know what are your strengths & weakness and which area/jobs you would have a competitive advantage.

Transitioning:Any last words from you?

Victor: Action is the fundamental key to success. If you want a different outcome in life, you have make a choice to either stay or leave as everything you do is a reflection of your choice.

End of interview and thank you.
