Jobless engineer unable to land job for 3 years and disappointed with CDC/e2i

Hi Gilbert,

This is my first time writing to you though I have heard of you for many years.

I have been unemployed since year 2015 and actively seeking jobs but in vain. First question that will come to your mind might be how do you manage to stay alive? There is no mistake here, it has been almost 3 years since I was last employed.

I am single, lived with my parents and have always been saving and living a frugal lifestyle, never buy iPhone, Samsung Galaxy or any expensive stuff in general.

I have approached CDAC and e2i (and waited for years) but they are just nice on the outside but otherwise completely useless. I have not asked for dream jobs or any other unreasonable demands. My only requirement is no Sales job, it can be full-time, part-time or contract, I don’t mind.

I have a driving license but have never drive ever since I pass the test more than a decade ago, so I never apply for any jobs that require driving.

I do not know if there is any chance of assisting me in gaining employment. I will not be asking for any financial assistance as I still wish to earn one’s keeps.

You can try to apply to SMRT to be an engineer. They need people now after sacking some staff recently. If you are healthy, there is a greater chance of being hired. Those who are sickly will find it very difficult to land a job. And they will always worry about the high medical bills they need to pay.

    Hello there,

I can offer a perm position, immediately, but I do think we need to align your’s and my expectations for a start…

First of all, you are not alone. For another 3months, I will mark the 3rd year anniversary as a jobless man too.

Come straight to the point, attending E2i/CDAC courses is a good thing … yet what’s the main objective? I had attended quite a few those sessions and the result? Is as good as you think it is. Our situation is such: the horrible macro environment.

I (or we?) can still survive working low end jobs which barely feed hand to mouth and that is it. Once you are in that cycle, your destiny is sealed. I am not going to enrich other just to survive. We can be everything as low-end as we want and that is if you have an objective to better the situation or else just have a job and move on with life.

Most employers will want to pay as low as possible, that’s nature. And they will want to max out the returns on each employee, that’s nature too.

If you think driving is the way to go for you, just ignore the fact that ypu never drive after you got your licence (years back). White lies if you need to. It does not pay to be awfully honest. Get the job you need with whatever white lies you have to give as long as it is not a criminal act. Some readers may not agree with me and this comment may not be published.

But alas… I see enough of the society, so-call friends and relatives during this period of unemployment. I am leaving singapore, to rebuild my 2nd life.

Having unemployed is a rare opportunity to look at our life and surrounding with fresh view. Unless you are blind at heart, make it the best time of our life.

Best wish for your journey ahead, godspeed.

    I will not miss singapore.
