54-year-old retrenched woman looking for work to alleviate husband

Hi Gilbert,

I just get to know about your organization and website.

I thought of sharing my experience. I am a 54-year-old Singaporean with 2 kids and GCE ” O ” level.

I have been working in a US MNC company for 8 year plus and I have thought of working till my retirement age of 62 years old to help my husband to support my 2 girls to university.

A lot of companies wanted to cut cost and re-allocate to other country, my company also follow the trend and move out our whole finance dept to KL, so I was retrenched last year.

After I left the company, I have been looking for jobs but at my age of 54, I have never give up and send my job application to the agency and also go for a few interviews but so far there is no positive reply.

I am just worried that if I cannot get a job asap, my husband will be very tough to support the 2 kids, 2 old folks and me.

Understand you also will help those people to find job, appreciate if you can assist me.

A minionster cried while giving his speech yesterday about the plight of unemployed PMETs unable to find jobs to feed the family. Is this for real? Or wayang only? Nobody knows. But there is one issue, there’s no safe guard at all to help the locals towards unfair discrimination. So TAFEP set up for what? Only guidelines but useless & nobody cares…

If you are trying to help in the role as a bread winner in the family, I guess you got to grab any types of jobs first. The salary may be low but at least better than nothing else.

I sincerely don’t think age is the primary factor, but most cry victim to that.
In your 20s and 30s, O level seem acceptable or even considered great in era of 80s.
At modern age, an O level like to compete with private U; what is your chances? Let alone those well qualified people.
If you are not well qualified, then you can only look for job filler role. This then of course employer prefer someone fast and efficient at work (quick learner and tech savvy), yet cheap.
You have difficulty finding is because many low level jobs had been moved to cheaper countries.
The key here is that you are under qualified, you are lucky to survive this long.
The chance of you landing a job in finance is low, you should look for job that suit your qualification.
