Retrenched mid 40s banker managed to secure job within 2 weeks

1. First of all, thanks for allowing us to interview you online Jess and can you provide us with some background information about yourself?

Banking, VP. Mid 40s.

2. What was  your last occupation and you have told me that you were unemployed for a short while, can you tell us more about this and  also  your job search experience?

Hi – no, I was made redundant end Jan, but managed to secure a new job in 2 weeks.

This is a far cry from my previous experience where it took me over 4 months to get an interview.

3. You have told me that you are currently jobless for more than six months, what did you do in order to survive? Did you also approach the CDC for assistance?

4. Did you attend any interviews  during the past few  months  and why do you think you are unsuccessful so far?

This time around, I think I’m successful due to the fact that I am a Singaporean.

5. Tell us abit more about what you have learnt from your jobless experience and how it has impacted your family.

Horrible feeling. Had to cut down on everything. Made my kids sad…

6. What do you think you could have done to shorten the unemployment period?

Accept lower pay I guess.

7. Do you think that Singapore is now a more difficult place to make a living?

Even though I got a job quickly, I count myself very lucky.

8. What do you think the government can do to alleviate the current employment situation?

Continue the Singaporean-first campaign. Give tax breaks to company, etc. so we are not undercut by “cheaper” foreign talent

9. Many people have blame foreigners for competing jobs with us, what is your view on this?

There are some groups who look out for their own, e.g. IT. There is no competition. Just a big wall.

There are young SG grads who can learn but have no opportunity. So in the long run, there will be no SG managers, much less senior managers.

This is not good for the Singaporean core.

10. Lastly, whats’ your advice for those who are still jobless and feeling down?

Keep your head up. Leave SG if you need to.

End of interview

Editor’s note: The PMET suffers a pay cut but still manages to earn around $20,000 plus a month.

20K a month? Why is the government protecting these bankers? Are they pro-elite?

  2. Steve says:

I left SG, took a pay cut and got employed in China. Yes I became. Foreign Talent in China….after a few years I got promoted and now I won a big deal in SG or this China MNC and they plan to make me the director to ask me help setup SG operation. I will only hire Singaporeans
