SME employer from construction sector looking for local civil/structural engineers

Dear Gilbert,

I am looking for engineers with experience in the construction sector.

We should be able to help take in a few of these jobless engineering people provided they have the relevant diploma/degree, sufficient work experience in construction and the salary range meets their expectations.

I’m not sure what kind  of salaries your engineers would be expecting.

Firstly, they must have either a civil/structural engineering diploma or degree.

Then depending on whether their diploma or degree is recognized here in SG, they would need anywhere from 6 month to 1 year direct work experience in construction under the supervision of a Professional Engineer.  That would then allow them to be registered as either Resident Technical Officers (RTO) or resident engineer (RE).

I can take in immediately anyone who meets the above requirements with the RTO/RE registration.

For those without the required site experience and registration, we are willing to train and mentor them for the required 6-12 months under a professional engineer as an assistant Technical Officer at a lower salary.

After their training, the professional engineer will certify them and we would then submit their registrations as RTOs/REs.

Their real employment will start after obtaining their registrations. We would be bonding them for a minimum 2 years. As a guide, our current RTOs earn between $2.5-$4.5k/month while our REs earn $4.5-8k/month depending on their performance.

We have urgent shortage of personnel at the moment and have been running some of our projects at 50% staff strength.

We are unable to use mechanical engineers as registered RTOs as the registration only applies to civil and structural engineers. Retraining wouldnt work because the registering body wouldnt in the first place recognise their mechanical degrees for registration.

However, we do on occasion require mechanical inspectors even without registration but we don’t have any opening for those at the moment.

We’ll try and hire as many of your jobless Singaporeans as possible but they need to be able to be registered or we ultimately cannot use them as inspectors.

We have been communicating with both MOM as well as with the Building Control Authority on this problem of retraining and hiring so we’re very keen on finding some workable solution that would benefit both ourselves as well as the jobless.

Even if you have just a few jobless C/S engineers, we’ll take them if they are willing to be retrained and work.

The shortage in the construction industry has been acute and many companies have been losing money and shrinking operations, or relocating out of Singapore because of this lack of manpower and turning to foreigners to fill these positions isn’t an option either because of the tightened conditions recently by MOM.

I hope we can work something out. We are  looking for long term career paths for our supervisors to help us continue growing.

Let me know what you think. Thanks alot for helping.

I’m jobless for 6 months now, but can’t fit into the requirement.

I just want to say Thank You to the SME Employer for hiring Singaporeans first. The salary you are offering seems reasonable to me. I hope more companies do such things. Wish you all the best in finding good local employees and also your business to grow.

I have mechanical engineering cert but seems redundant. :(
    I wouldn’t mind construction work but i’m 39.

Joe: There are 2 type of site supervisor namely Resident Technical Officers (RTO) or resident engineer (RE) which needs to be registered.

A apart from Diploma & Degree in Civil/Construction Engineering, the other engineering Diploma & Degree is not recognized.

I also do not mind to work in construction for a reasonable salary. However our qualification is not related & can only work as a general worker which to me is not within my expected salary to support my family.

You sure you want to work as a general worker with their position salary range in Singapore?

From what i see is many people stay away from taking up Diploma & Degree in Civil/Construction Engineering bcoz of the working environment & employment condition.

Tough, fast paced, stressful, deadline to meet, rain & shine, muddy, smelly, safety KPI, low budget, heat arguement, subcon, maincon, govt law, injury, death etc.

Many will prefer taking up diploma/degree in other engineering studies, finance & banking, accounting, medical, chemical, IT, HR & marketing etc.
