Transitioning.org will be conducting a networking session for those who are in transition at:-

We realise that people in transition tend to stay at home alot and besides going for interviews, many simply surf the net or watch TV with the extra time. There is also the feeling that you are all on your own.
Its good to come out once a while and network with those who are caught in similar circumstances.
We are also privileged to have with us someone who is in the translation business. He is here to share with us informally how he starts his own business and I am sure that we will learn a thing or two from him.
I will also be around to share about my business trip in China recently and provide some tips on how to survive in the Chinese business environment.

I have been looking for a translation job for some years now without success. Some of my applications received no response, while others required me to take an aptitude test. However, after the test, I did not land any job. I am willing to learn and progress in the job but I am not given the opportunity to do so. I have heard of people doing translation for free for many years before they set up a company together. I have 2 questions:
1) Almost all the job adverts require someone with at least 3 yrs or even 5 yrs experience in translation. If nobody wants to give someone without practical experience a chance, how can we venture into the industry?
2) Most translators are self-employed or work as freelancers. They are paid according to the projects which they do. Hence, their income is not stable throughout the year. Thus, how do they contribute to their CPF on a monthly basis? How do they calculate the monthly contribution to their CPF when they cannot anticipate the projects? Do they have to pay income tax?
