Dear Gibert
We appreciate your time and effort to organize the petition for our follow Singaporeans.
However, it may not be very effective in cutting down the unemployment rate.
Please allow me to share some of my thought.
To be frank, some of the jobs which are being filled by foreigners are those that either our follow singaporeans are not
capable of doing or do not want to do. It could be due to the levels of skills, qualifications or experience. Or it could be too tough.
In most cases, employers will possibly prefer to employ locals as it is more convenient.
Besides, there are other reasons why employers prefer foreigners. An example is the service and hospitality industries that need a young and energic work force.
Perhaps, one area of concern that you may like to look into is those who are already out of job for longer than 25 weeks despite their active effort in looking for one.
One group of hardest hit are those who are 45-62. They are either too old to work in the eyes of employers but too early to retire. In most cases, they cannot afford to retire for financial reason.
The Government has encouraged companies to re-emply those who reach retirement age. But how abt those who are already out of job. Some find it almost impossible to land a job even though they are capable of doing some of the jobs.
Maybe the public service can set an example by offering more openings to hire those 45-62.
Tks & rgds
