Singaporean PMETs Discriminated Against By Foreign-owned Companies (Asiaone Forum)

  • The government needs to realise that with the huge influx of foreigners into the PMETs’ work sectors , Singaporeans are being marginalised in the work place at our own backyard.
  • The MNCs are taking advantage of government policies to staff their operations with foreigners that have no significant contribution at all  to their company. These foreigners are transferred from their HQs to Singapore  so that they have jobs here. When it comes to the crunch, the local Singaporeans are retrenched first.
  • In many of these operations , the ratio of foreigner to local staff is above 75% .  How can this be?  Singaporeans are really at the mercy of these MNC operations. You are practically outnumbered, your team members are mostly foreigners, your boss and his boss are also foreigners  and when it comes to who to let go  they would choose to let go the local staff first always protecting their own foreign legion.
  • I have been retrenched recently and the above scenario is  exactly happening in this company of mine. It is not about increasing productivity and  levy anymore now,  it is about the foreigners who are discriminating the Singaporeans in our own backyard.
  • I hope the Government and MOM view this vmatter ery seriously and investigate this kind of foreign-owned companies.  I would be available to provide more information if necessary.

  • What you have quoted is very true…
  • In the shipping companies, banks, law firms, the top management is stuffed with foreigners. The cheap, cheap labourers are also foreigners. Only a few Singaporeans are smacked right at the middle. These foreigners are happily working in a very comfortable country, everything nicely done for them and best of all, the tax system is to their benefit!!! (except Americans).
  • I am sure the same situation applies to manufacturing firms and other industries as well.
  •  To think  that we’re in Singapore and many of the people we work with or work for are foreigners…its extremely disturbing. Frankly speaking, it’ll be alright if a foreign company has a few foreigners heading the team but the bulk of the staff should be Singaporeans. It’s difficult to understand why Singapore is having the problems we have today even though the government proclaimed their own capabilities and increase their salaries almost every other year (bearing in mind that their incomes are already very, very respectable).

  • I totally agree and emphatise with you. I work in a foreign MNC as well and are experiencing the same issue.
  • Two  years ago, in came a head of dept from a foreign land and very quickly within 6 mths we had another eight  mid level staff coming in from the same foreign land. The justification given by the head was  that these people  have good contacts and will generate sales quickly.
  • Today, of the eight foreign staff that came in, 5 are clearly non-performing sales staff with 1 even having no sales at all for a full 10mths!!  When it came to downsizing, our support staff (Singaporeans) were let go instead. Reasons? Job redundancy and low volumes!!!

We are so called victim of our own success..but who fault..it is our govt.
When small rains..caused floods in our island…ooo.. no fault of the govt…but when we single singaporean are not married..we are penalized for it by not enjoying the new HDB. It is our fault..when we got retrenched by foreigners in our homeland..it is also our fault.

So if u find good opportunities overseas and being valued …move on and out !

Singapore use to give red carpet treatment to MNCs, now they give red carpet treatment to foreigners.

Don’t blame the government, blame ourselves. We are so spineless that it is a guilt if the government don’t do us in.

For those who are still having a job, they will still vote for this ‘axis of evil’ and ensure a full 82 seats again. Many of my colleagues are such even though they complained so much.

My apple-polishing HR guy(local born Sinkee) had again proposed a full ‘foreign’ recruitment to fill up the sales department. Singapore is now full of such arsehole local HR people whose mantra is ‘local bad, foreign good’.

I think even god will give favor to those in power, and PAP will last for eternally as old man had wish.

My only wish now is for the management to replace that HR guy with a foreigner.
