Help borrowers find hope

I refer to the well-written report “Authorities armed to the teeth” (Jan 13).

The Government is to be applauded for providing the relevant authorities with more power to tackle the growing loan-sharking problem before the opening of the integrated resorts. Gambling and loan-sharking go hand in hand.

There was a serious recession last year, so illegal lending grew as the unemployed searched for funds. There is only so much that a person can borrow from friends and relatives. For some, loan sharks might even be their first choice of lender as it saves them the embarrassment of approaching people they know.

I agree that punishing borrowers will not solve the problem. For a start, most people would not want to borrow from loan sharks. The ones who do, I believe, are middle-aged blue collar workers facing long term after being laid off, as they are neither very skilful nor highly educated. They also fail to land with adequate pay to motivate them to stay in their .

Many turn to gambling in the hope of improving their situation, but end up exacerbating the problem.

Yes, this group needs to be provided proper and skills upgrading so that they find hope in their situation. They should also be provided state assistance so that they will not turn to illegal modes.

However, the procedures for assessing their situation should be made simpler and less stringent. I know of many who would never approach their Community Development Council (CDC) for help because they have heard too many stories of CDC officers being too interrogative and arrogant.

The problem also needs a many-hands-on approach instead of just relying on the authorities. Family members and friends should rally around a person who has borrowed from loan sharks. They should encourage the person instead of condemning him even if he borrows to gamble.

Through love and acceptance, a person has a better chance to change.
