Tips from someone who was jobless for a year (23 Sep)

Dear All,

I was  transitioning during the period when  Lehman Brothers collapsed and was  searching for work for about a year. I just found a job three months ago.

I have a few tips to provide for those who are still searching for work here.

The good thing about unemployment is that you will know who your true real friends are and you then  filter out those who are unreliable. You  get to understand the human race better when you are unemployed.

Many who are jobless here will understand the  cold experience  when you turn up at  CDC (Community Devlopment Council – a government-linked welfare arm) looking for help. What irked me alot is that they  made you sign a letter to protect themselves – even before they  start to assist you!

You can find your MP (Member of Parliament) but they will refer you to the volunteer RC (Resident Committee) members who will later refer you to the CDCs.

Don’t jump into courses anyhow and later realise that  there are no jobs available after finishing the course. Do some research before you take up any courses even though they are heavily subsidised.  Don’t follow the crowd.

One good thing I discovered about my unemployment experience was that I have alot of spare time to  read   books in the library. The best part about it  is they are free and the place is in air con comfort condition! It sure beats staying at home staring at the four walls.  Staying at home daily with nothing to do  can also drive you crazy!

Now that I am gainfully employed,  I do  misse the period during  transitioning whereby Gilbert lent us a helping hand by organising get together activities for the unemployed. I  met  a few good friends from such gathering whom I am still in contact.

Lastly, don’t depend on anyone or authorities but yourself and God. Pray alot also!!

Keep it up and cheers.

Yours Sincerely,

Quek

What the Hell is a CDC? I don’t think Center for Disease Control applies. A google search turned up nothing helpful. And MP? RC? Do the unemployed develop there own language after a few months of being out of work?

Perhaps ypu are a foreigner – my apologies.

CDC stabds for Community Development Council – a govt-linked job search agency who will help the jobless find work. They also dispense welfare when available.

MP stands for Member of parliament – our voted politicians in the election who will aid his residents staying within his precinct.

RC stands for resident committee – another govt-linked centre whereby people staying nearby can come together for recreation and courses.

    Hope this help.

    Gilbert
