Click here to read the official statistics on marriages and divorces
The median number of years before a marriage breaks up is 10 years for a marriage by non-muslims in singapore and that for a muslim marriage is 8 years. In other words, if your marriage can last 8-10 years or rather 10 years, pretty much you’ve both crossed the most difficult stage
The question therefore naturally is how conducive is Singapore’s environment to sustain a marriage for the first 10 years… personally I think it’s gone from ok in the 1980s to pathethic since 1990s.
Firstly, the number of marriages hasnt changed much between 1980s till now. but the number of divorces have dramatically changed. we have way much more agencies today in singapore from MCYS to MCYS funded and run agencies. why has the upward trend not been tackled?
Secondly, almost two thirds of the divorce proceedings are in fact initiated by wives be it a Muslim marriage or non-muslim marriage. Is Women’s charter making women trigger friendly in marital conflicts providing them with more incentives to walk out then work out?
Thirdly, our Women’s Charter may provide legal arsenal for women abused in marriage to seek rightful recourse. But it does not have the necessary checks and balances to prevent abusive women from using women’s charter as a means to extend her domestic conflict with her husband. if those checks are put in place or better still if Women’s Charter is replaced with Family Charter which represents women, husbands and children’s interests instead of purely women’s interests, will we see divorce rate being so high?
Fourthly, in other countries , Muslim marriages generally have lower divorce rates per se and relative to non-muslim divorce rates. . why then in singapore is it high and also higher than non-Muslim divorce rates. what have the government appointed and well funded agencies done to stem this deterioration given agencies such as MUIS been around for 40 years.
Lastly, Singapore divorce rates are one of the highest if not the highest in ASEAN though it was not so much different 40 years ago. how meaningful is the economic success that has not seen social units stability being preserved in the mad race for material accumulation?
