Diary of Someone In Transition: Sydney

Scenic Darling Harbour in Sydney
I will be transitioning in Sydney from 14 June (Sunday) onwards to visit my family. I have not seen them for six months since I returned to Singapore in January this year to take up a short-term teaching post, launched my book and the transitioning society. In between, I continued to write and saw some letters published in the papers here though somewhat lesser than I expected.
Much has happened to me during these short half a year period and I must say that it was both eventful and fruitful. I could never have asked for more than what had happened to me. Many events were to me ground breaking and there were a shift of paradigym on a personal level. Speaking at Hong Lim Park’s Speaker’s Corner on unemployment issue was earth shaking for me as the fear factor was eradicated once and for all. It felt liberated and the experience was a tremendous relief that I could do it despite my initial fear.
Running the transitioning society full time for the past two months have also been meaningful and humbling as I got to meet many people who are in transition themselves. Some shared their stories with me as if I am their close friend whereas others have taught me how to live life to the fullest despite setbacks. I learned more from these people than I could have doing it on my own. Sometimes, when you helped others, the person that received the most ultimately is always the helper himself.
Some people have asked me “So what happen to Transitioning now?”
Transitioning will still operate but in a more online mode though Rina, my administrator, will run the society on my behalf acting on my instructions.
Online counselling will still be available to those that need help and our counsellors are still on standby to counsel people in need.
We will try to schedule support group activities after a break from our series in May. I hope to see that activities will still carry on though physically I am not present during this period.
Some also asked me what will I be doing in Sydney during this few months.
Possible, I will try to replicate what is done here in Sydney – that is setting up another Transitioning In Sydney among the jobless people there. To date, Australia has about 2 million people jobless and alot of them are located in Sydney. It will be good if some of our activities can be brought to the harbour city there.
Once again, I want to thank those members who are supporting me all along and encouraging me when the journey seems trying. I have make some good friends along the way and you know who you are.
I will continue to update the site all the way from the land of the Oz and hopefully I can also write my second book there amidst all the H1Ni germs flying around the continent.
For those still in transition, try to find support from one another and never lose hope that one day you will be going to work again with your tie on.

Oh man, don’t talk about Sydney. I kind of miss that place even though I grumble that Sydney can be boring at times. But I can’t forget the walks from George St all the way to Broadway. The walk along Newtown, along Oxford St, Darling Harbour and Circular Quay at nights. And the walk from Coogee to Bondi…

Same sentiments here.
When you are there you hate the place but when you are away you miss it!
Gilbert
Like what I said, Gilbert, we unemployed sometimes need a holiday from unemployment too. Enjoy your break!
