Diary of Someone In Transition (Day 16)

Number of View: 355

For those in transition now,  Labour Day must be an event that smirked of some irony and distaste.

As people celebrated Labour Day – a day for the workers,  those who are not working must be wondering “Should I celebrate too?”

I say why not? We get to enjoy the holiday festival with our family and it is an extended holiday from Friday to Sunday. I believe many would have taken the long break and ventured to nearby countries for some good rest from the previous week’s madness of more bad news.

Last week ended with some nice breakthrough for the society:

1. We managed to collaborate with Care Corner Counselling Centre to run a talk for the unemployed community on 14 May (Thurs). I hope to do this regularly

2. Spoken with the Catholic Society first time and there is a chance to network more.

3. Spoken with a local learning institution also and there may be a favourable chance to do more in future for them.

As I ran around doing work for the society, I realised the importance of networking here. Out of the three meetings written above, two are introduced by friends who told me that without their help, it is tough to even step into the institution and speak with the relevant person. Once they have introduced and spoke about me in the right light, the door was swung wide open and once I could meet their insititutional needs it is easy for me to do something here.

Once again, the way to our next job in this difficult period will also be through networking. I have spoken about getting my past five jobs through friends’ referral. I believe my next job will be in the same pattern.

Though I would not discount getting work through sending emails to prospective employers, I believe that the equal amount of time should be given to networking i.e. spending enough time outside meeting up with people that you do not know. Do not be shy to tell them that you need their assistance. Once, they realise that you are a nice person to be around, they will not hesistate to recommend you a vancancy if it is suitable.

So go round and spend more time outside rather than waiting for the phone to ring. You never know when the time harvested outside will reap forth bountiful result soon!
