My foreign students invited me for karaoke sing along session yesterday and I felt good singing with them at the Bugis Top One Karaoke joint. Singing indeed blew away all the blues!
They were all girls and from China and I was like totally immersed in another culture while interacting with them.
Their perseverance and thankfulness at whatever opportunites that our country present to them touched me. Many came to study and cherish the opportunities that were offered to them. Few want to return home as there are many people fighting over too little employment chances. I guess we all need to learn a thing or two from them. For one, we need to be less choosy about work especially in this down time.
We later adjoined to eat steam boat – a favourite eating habit of the Chinese people. While working in China last year, I ate alot of their steamboat stuff and it was deliciously good especially during winter period. The food was also soupy and it tasted wonderfully nice when taken in cold winter.
In Singapore, the Chinese often try out our steamboat courses and I am surprised that most of such eateries are managed by the Chinese people from the bosses right down to the ones who served us!
As I went home after a hearty time of singing and eating, I began to take note of how the foreigners wanted to take root in our prosperous home land which many Singaporeans may have fail to appreciate – including me.
It took a day of hanging out with the foreigners that make me realised why so many people from abroad want to make Singapore their home town – at least for the time being.
