Live life fully while we are healthy 42-16248525

I READ last week’s Saturday Special report, ‘Going gently into the night’, with much sadness.

The worst form of death is the kind that is premature, especially when one is seen to be in the prime of his life.

I lost my dad to stomach cancer when he was only 60 years old . We were never close till he contracted the disease, but we talked for a whole year every day when he was still living, catching up on those lost years. The only regret I had of the episode was that we never had a better relationship when I was younger.

As evidenced from the report, those who were dying were living their last few years intensely and meaningfully. All wanted to leave behind some form of legacy which they could pass on to their children and loved ones.

I wish many of us could live our lives the way these people did. Most people go through life aimlessly, some living for themselves only. They amass riches along the way, but fail to be fully satisfied with any of their achievements.

The best time of our lives is when we live it for the benefit of others – volunteering our time for the underprivileged and needy. When we see that others are better off as a result of our efforts, we gain contentment.

Let us not begin to really live our lives only when we contract a terminal illness – let us live our lives right now when we are still healthy and strong.
