We should ?learnto take more risks

Letter from Gilbert Goh Keow Wah

I WONDER if we should depend solely on the Government to bail us out every time the economy heads south or when we lose our jobs — especially the professionals.

For sure, the Government has stepped up to the plate with its recruitment drive for the civil service. But these are still early days to determine the success of theprogramme.

For professionals who are currently unemployed, I hope this crisis offers us the opportunity to be self-reliant because we have the skills and qualifications to look for suitable employers not just here but also abroad.

As one who has travelled and worked in countries like China, where opportunities abound for businesses, I was disappointed that very few Singaporeans venture out to these places.

I am unsure why we are so risk-averse. Is our Government too protective? What can it do or not do to allow us to be more adventurous and risk-taking?

Let’s not wait for it to do our thinking for us. It’s time to reach out on our own, for we can use this crisis to boost our adversity quotient.

    Dear Gilbert,

This article is indeed very encouraging.

I like to introduce my website, http://www.ideaustry.sg for PMETs who were retrenched.

It’s a website where the more entrepreneurial in spirit (Pioneers) can find expertise and funding to execute their projects or ideas.

It also offers other PMETs (Advocates-active) with specialized skill sets to get contract employment for these projects.

I sincerely hope that this website can assist the many PMETs to execute their dreams or to get some contract work.

I have got three projects running and a fourth one will be added shortly.

    Regards.
